Saigyoan of here Kyoto is a historic place where Saigyo, a famous poet of the Heian era, managed the temple Saika-onin and lived his life. It is composed of Saigyo-do which is dedicated to Saigyo, the main house, and detached house Kainyoan. Especially Kainyoan( another name:an evening story room) is a famous tea-ceremony room as that it is brought for a betrothal gift of a daughter of Ukita Hideie(Japanese Daimyo in Momoyama era). In addtion to the historical background, its fine workmanship is admirable, therefore it worth seeing very much.
Saigyoan is located near flourishing area though, if you enter the gate you will forget worldly affairs quickly because of silence.




In early morning, they draw fresh water from the well in the garden and boiled it by charcoal, then make an offering of incense and tea ceremony for Saigyo. It is at the break of dawn, and in listening to the sound of boiling water, the sky obove Higashiyama
is growing light. You can experience the tea ceremony in fresh sunlight and pure air.
The early-morning tea ceremony herewill be a precious experience for you.












At the main house Jomyoan, enjoy a tea ceremony and then visit the main house and the detached house Kainyoan with the owner.


Jomyoan was placed at Takagamine as a residence of sub-temple of Daitokuji. In the last days of the Tokugawa shogunate, Nakagawa Yasutaro who is a pupil of a scholar Kasuga Senan used it as a school "Keimei-juku" for men of noble ideas. In 1893, it was moved here to reconstruct Saigyoan, since thenit has been deserve to be an appearance for a master of tea ceremony. Jomyoan has a full of atmosphere with a straw-thatched roof, short-eaves thatched hut, and the bamboo ceiling and more!



Kainyoan is known as a famous architecture which is brought for a betrothal gift of a daughter of Ukita Hideie(Japanese Daimyo in Momoyama era) for Kuga family. In addtion to the historical background, its fine workmanship is admirable. The most famous point of Kainyoan is the unique structure. Between the guest space(3 jo) and the host space for making a tea ceremony (1 jo), there is a fusuma(Japanese partition). This structure is not only for an effect to entertain the guest but for showing an attitude to be humble. Moreover, it has a circular window at the front, and a paper sliding door stands behind that. Therefore it worth seeing very much. Also, this house was before in Hirano, northern part of Kyoto, and in the last days of the Tokugawa shogunate, a scholar Kasuga Senan who was executed at Ansei Purge lived in it. He used it as an important place for a secret conference to work on the meiji Restoration with Okubo Toshimichi and Saigo Takamori.
